Introduction to IP dustproof and waterproof grade detection


IP is the abbreviation of ingress protection. IP grade is the protection grade of electrical equipment shell against foreign matter intrusion. The source is IEC 60529, which was also adopted as the American national standard in 2004.

In this standard, for the protection of electrical equipment shell against foreign matters, the format of IP grade is ipxx, where XX is two Arabic numerals. The first marked number represents the contact protection and foreign object protection grade, and the second marked number represents the waterproof protection grade. For specific protection grades, please refer to the following table.

The following are the different levels of testing:

Dust proof grade

IP1 x
Solid foreign body detectors with a diameter of 50mm and larger shall be protected. The sphere diameter is 50mm and shall not enter completely
IP2 x
Solid foreign body detectors with a diameter of 12.5mm and larger shall be protected. The sphere diameter is 12.5mm and shall not enter completely
IP3 x
Solid foreign body detectors with a diameter of 2.5mm and larger shall be protected. The sphere diameter is 2.5mm and shall not enter completely
IP4 x
Solid foreign body detectors with a diameter of 1.0mm and larger shall be protected. The sphere diameter is 1.0mm and shall not enter completely
IP5 x
Dust protection cannot completely prevent dust from entering, but the amount of dust entering will not cause damage to the equipment
IP6 x
Dust shall not enter the dust enclosure at a low pressure of 20 mbar
